The Garden Doctor agrees with you about overplanting and eating the thinnings. In fact, I suspect he would agree with everything you've written here.

To me, it's as simple as the more I do with things from the garden - whatever stage they're at - the better I eat. Lovely post.

Hey Tammois, I meant to say something about perfectionism being your worst enemy in the home garden but forgot and you have said it so perfectly!

Try a fresh parsnip, you'll not regret it (parsnips always need the freshest of seed to germinate, so order some right now and make sure it's from February crops). They say once you let one go to seed you will never ever want for them. Mandrakes anyone?

Great post, DSO. It's having that relaxed attitude and relishing in the results that enables us to do as much as we do too. And although I've never been much of a parsnip eater, you've compelled me to try again as per your saucy chook casserole. It seems that what keeps a lot of people from doing more cooking and gardening is feeling uptight about doing it 'perfectly'. As for the aesthetics of our produce, it's disgraceful what is thrown out based on some Disney-esque notion of what a vegie should look like. I'd eat your ladydrakes anytime over the tasteless crap from Coles. ;-)

On ya DSO, i guess that i am betraying my h/yippie upbringing, but i am with you all the way re the supermarket veg aesthetic. the Hbomb loves the great shapes of the carrots that come out of the garden, my biggest problem is preventing her from pulling them all out once she realises that there is a new patch in the garden. I've just planted parsnip and celeriac for the first time, should be interesting. also have a few of the siberian tomatoes in sunny areas of the garden, which will be interesting. a sad reflection on them is that at the same time as i put them in, a self sown tomato, prob a cherry, popped up in a bare patch and it is going great while the siberians are looking a bit weedy.
